Baurstookeen Tower House

There are 32 cylindrical tower houses in Ireland. This is one of thirteen built in Tipperary. This late 15th/early 16th century castle stands on a small island in the middle of the River Suir. Only the eastern section of the four storey structure survives. The tower was erected here to guard the river crossing, possibly by the Butlers, along with the Shortalls, they are known to have built several circular tower houses. There are still some interesting features present, see images below. The walls of an earlier, probably Norman castle, were discovered on the southside of the island.
